Report: Password fatigue compromises employee productivity, security and well-being

Logging in – often considered probably the most mundane, yet essential areas of work has turned into a thorn in employees sides. The procedure is frequently overly complicated, disruptive, and frustrating to employees, ultimately putting important data and information at an increased risk as employees succumb to password fatigue.

This is actually the conclusion of a fresh report by 1Password, which discovered that 43% of employees admit to sharing logins, delegating tasks to others, and also avoiding their work altogether to remove the headache of logging in – dangerous behaviors that threaten the security of these organizations.

The report, which surveyed 2,000 UNITED STATES adults who worked full-time primarily at some type of computer, finds that complex login procedures can spend your time and stifle productivity: greater than a quarter of respondents (26%) have just abadndoned doing something due to the hassle of logging in, and 38% have procrastinated, delegated, or skipped establishing security apps because of the burdensome steps necessary to sign in.

Complex logins have kept nearly one in five (19%) workers from accessing employee-provided benefits made to reduce workplace stress. Theyve skipped open enrollment, forgone requesting time off, and missed employer-provided perks and discount marketplaces due to login challenges.

And throughout a period already complicated by burnout and quiet quitting, greater than a third of employees (37%) say that the onboarding process at their current job was time-consuming and confusing because of logging into new work-related accounts.

The survey also discovered that there’s widespread misunderstanding among employees around just what a safe login process entails. While 89% of employees think they often follow their employers guidelines, there exists a lot of confusion in what being secure actually means in 2022, given the onslaught of new threats.

Methodology

1Password conducted this research utilizing an online survey made by Method Research and written by Lucid among n=2,000 adults 18+ that are full-time employees at an organization with 250+ employees and primarily work with a computer for work. The sample contains n=1,500 U.S. respondents and n=500 Canadian respondents, having an even split between gender groups. Data was collected from June 7 to June 21, 2022.
