Report: Patrick Beverley Traded to Lakers; Jazz Get Talen Horton-Tucker

The LA Lakers reached an agreement Wednesday to obtain point guard Patrick Beverley from the Utah Jazz in trade for Talen Horton-Tucker, in accordance with Shams Charania of The Athletic and Stadium.

It had been a short stay static in Utah forBeverley, who found its way to early July within the blockbuster dealsending center Rudy Gobert to the Minnesota Timberwolves.

The 34-year-old Chicago native iscoming off a 2021-22 season with the Wolves where he averaged 9.2points, 4.6 assists, 4.1 rebounds and 1.2 steals across 58appearances.

He graded out positively at both endsof the ground to rank 61st among all NBA players in FiveThirtyEight’sWAR metric (5.4).

Beverley told KRIV’s Mark Bermangetting dealt to the Jazz didn’t catch him off guard, as he’s becomeaccustomed to changing teams.

“Surprised? No, not in thisbusiness. Nah, you can not be surprised,” he said. “Understood it. Never personal, alwaysbusiness in ecommerce. We did some very nice things in Minnesota. We sort of revampedthe environment there. We sort of gave the fans something to be happy about.”

Beverley, a 2009 second-round pick,started his pro career in Europe prior to making his NBA debut with theHouston Rockets through the 2012-13 season. After five years withHouston, he spent four with the LA Clippers and something with theWolves.

The University of Arkansas product hasaveraged 8.8 points, 4.3 rebounds, 3.5 assists and 1.1 steals in 526career games. He’s often been tasked with guarding the opponent’s topguard scorer, highlighted by earning NBA All-Defensive First Teamhonors in 2016-17.

Beverley represents a low-risk additionfor the Lakers. He’s a consistently reliable defender, which helpsoffset some offensive slumps for the career 41.4 percent shooter, andhe’s on an expiring one-year, $13 million contract, so there’s nolong-term investment.

He should slot in because the chief backupto Russell Westbrook following his proceed to L.A. The team’s backcourt defense ought to be tremendous when he’s on to the floor with AustinReaves.
