There have been so many scandals through the Trump years that it is hard to keep in mind all. Some stick out, needless to say, like his blatant obstruction of justice in the Russia investigation and his attempted extortion contrary to the Ukrainian government hoping of smearing Joe Biden. Not to mention Trump went with a bang, attempting a coup and inciting an insurrection. Those ideas got him impeached and could end up receiving him indicted. But there is a lot more.
You recall the horrificfamily separation policyat the border, which caused a global outcry and was finally reversed under great pressure. Trump eventually did build segments of his silly wall, but didn’t obtain thesharp spikesat the top or the alligator moat, ideas he actually raised at various points. He asked if the Border Patrol or National Guard could shoot undocumented immigrants at border crossings (OK, maybe just in the leg) and he campaigned on the thought ofreviving the hideous 1950s policy “Operation Wetback,”which rounded up immigrants (and sometimes U.S. citizens aswell) and dropped them off in the Mexican desert without food, water or money. Luckily, American law has evolved enough to avoid such inhumane practices, which I’m sure disappointed him. (Nowadays he’s proposing asimilar approachwith unhoused citizens in American cities, therefore the idea has stuck with him.)
Trump also had what he thought was an exceedingly clever intend to bus asylum seekers looking forward to their court appearances to cities in blue states. The Washington Postreportedin 2019 that the idea of the proposal was to “retaliate against his political rivals” and he have been pushing the theory for a lot more than half a year. He specifically wanted officials to ship suspected criminals off to “Democrat-run” cities but couldn’t discover a way to achieve that. Immigrants suspected of crimes aren’t released on bond, as are migrants who’ve been granted temporary asylum. Lawyer for immigration officials nixed the theory, calling it “inappropriate” largely due to liability issues and bad PR, not concern over human rights or basic decency also it didn’t go anywhere.
Trump without doubt thought he previously develop this notion himself but probably it had been Stephen Miller, his infamous immigration adviser. who put that bug in his ear. Understanding that Trump loved to take credit for several political slogans and stunts (including “Make AmericaGreat Again,” “America First” and “Drain the Swamp”), Miller likely didn’t tell Trump that idea had an extended and disgusting history in the us, most recently heading back to the civil rights era when White Citizens’ Councils in the south retaliated contrary to the Freedom Riders byrounding up Black folks and sending them to Northern citieswith fake promises of jobs and opportunity, dropping them off in places where they knew nobody. I’m sure that they had the right laughs over that certain.
I assume that sort of stunt never falls out of fashion with the far right. Only a few months ago it came up again on Tucker Carlson’s White Power hour:
Texas Gov. Greg Abbott apparently saluted smartly and got to work. By early Augusthe was sending busloadsof asylum-seekers to NY and Washington, D.C., “within the Governor’s reaction to the Biden Administration’s open border policies,” being an official statement from his office put it. (Never mind that the Biden administration does not have any such policies.)
Those two cities have already been dealing with the influx, and several charities and churches have stepped directly into help. That is stretching their already stretched systems, but up to now no-one has even contemplated putting the migrants on buses back again to Houston or San Antonio (or possibly to other red-state cities) as the officials in NY and D.C., whatever their flaws, aren’t monsters. They’re racking your brains on methods to help these folks find family and obtain jobs and housing because they await hearings on if they qualify in which to stay the U.S.
Never to be outdone by Abbott’s stunt, the GOP’s current troll king, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, decided this week to take Carlson’s advice to send asylum seekers to Martha’s Vineyard, the affluent resort island off the coast of Massachusetts. Despite the fact that Florida isn’t a border state, DeSantis has recently hadthe state legislature appropriate millionsfor the intended purpose of sending migrants out of state. (His lieutenant governormade a significant gaffe, however, when she suggested hawaii might use that money to send the recent influx of Cuban refugees back again to that island, ahugepolitical no-no in Florida.)

Since DeSantis didn’t have any refugees easily available to expel this week, he used his forced deportation money to charter a few jets and coerce migrants who have been in Texas halfway in the united states to board them, claiming these were being delivered to Boston with promises of resources and support. Instead the migrants were dropped off on Martha’s Vineyard, a famous summer resort with a year-round population of around 15,000. Nobody there knew these were coming, plus they were essentially dumped at the island’s tiny airport like cargo.
Since DeSantis didn’t have any refugees obtainable in Florida, he chartered a few jets and coerced migrants in Texas halfway in the united states to board them, claiming these were likely to Boston and promising resources and support.
DeSantis arranged for a video crew to record this atrocity for the entertainment of the xenophobic miscreants who watch Tucker Carlson’s network. Without doubt they enjoyed watching the footage of exhausted parents with small kids within their arms walking over the tarmac and wondering where in fact the hell these were. Locals on Martha’s Vineyardrose to the occasion, somewhat redeeming the trustworthiness of humans by offering the brand new arrivals food and shelter, alongsidelegal servicesand emotional support.
DeSantis seems exceedingly pleased with his immoral little stunt. He held apress conferencewhere he claimed that his reasoning for chartering airplanes to abduct migrants in Texas and fly them to the brand new England coast was to cut costs:
Among the reasons why you want to transfer [people is] because, obviously it’s expensive if folks are coming here, you have to cover taxes, social services, and each one of these other activities.
Lots of Floridians love these things, apparently. Consider, DeSantis’ “election police,”an especially flamboyant display of government waste. He’s up for re-election and leading Democrat Charlie Crist in the polls. Most observers don’t believe it’ll be all that close. Greg Abbott can be running for another term (against Democrat Beto O’Rourke), and he dropped off a busload of asylum seekerswhile watching Naval Observatory in D.C. this week that is the official residence of Vice President Kamala Harris. Abbott and DeSantis’ biggest fans are uncomfortably like the White Citizens’ Council members who clearly enjoyed the misery they inflicted by sending Black citizens north under false pretenses. They’re cruel, immoral bigots who get pleasure from hurting others.
I’m sure another Big Florida Man is gnashing his teeth in Mar-a-Lago over DeSantis, his likely 2024 opponent, getting all of this great press for owning the libs when Trump thinks it had been all his idea to begin with. If he slithers back again to the White House it is possible to bet he’ll seek to accomplish this on a national scale. But so will any Republican more likely to get elected to national office any time in the future. The red-state “laboratories of democracy” are at the forefront.
