Savage injures hamstring during Packers’ ‘Family Night’

GREEN BAY, Wis. (AP) Starting safety Darnell Savage suffered a hamstring injury through the Green Bay Packers traditional Family Night practice at Lambeau Field on Friday.

During one-on-one matchups between receivers and defensive backs early used, Savage pulled up while attempting to cover Amari Rodgers. Savage, a first-round draft pick in 2019, watched the others of practice from the sideline with ice wrapped around his right leg.

I dont think its a problem, Savage said. Its a fast-people injury. Some of these things you cant avoid. Ill just handle it the proper way and pay attention to those guys back there and Ill be fine.

Early in training camp, Green Bays defense has mostly had its way having an offense thats led by four-time MVP quarterback Aaron Rodgers but is adjusting to playing without All-Pro receiver Davante Adams. With Vernon Scott replacing Savage in the lineup, the defenses strong play continued.

Throughout a red-zone period, the starting offense ran seven plays in the 10-yard line but scored only one time. Rodgers zipped a touchdown pass to tight end Marcedes Lewis against tight coverage from rookie linebacker Quay Walker on the next play.

From then on, safety Adrian Amos split up a pass to Randall Cobb, linebacker DeVondre Campbell stopped Aaron Jones on a jet-sweep-style flip from Rodgers, safety Shawn Davis almost intercepted a pass designed for Allen Lazard, and defensive tackle Dean Lowry dropped Jones on a run from the two 2.

I believe theres some things were performing a congrats with and theres plenty of areas for improvement, coach Matt LaFleur said. A very important factor that weve sort of challenged our defense on may be the consistency with stopping the run, and I believe theyve done a fairly nice job defending the pass and, specifically, the deep balls rather than giving up a huge amount of big plays down the field.

In the beginning of camp, Rodgers predicted the offense would get our butts kicked most days by way of a defense that could be the teams best since winning the Super Bowl in 2010. The Packers re-signed Campbell and cornerback Rasul Douglas, added defensive tackle Jarran Reed in free agency and added Walker and defensive tackle Devonte Wyatt in first round of the draft.

Meanwhile, Green Bays offense has struggled without Adams, who was simply traded to the Raiders in February, and offensive linemen David Bakhtiari and Elgton Jenkins, that are dealing with torn ACLs.

Its a double-edged sword, LaFleur said. I am hoping its our defense is actually stout and theyre likely to be very tough to cope with. I think the main one area that people need to improve is merely the consistency in advance. Now, granted, I believe we have a fairly good defensive front. Our front seven could be pretty salty, therefore i hope theyre making our offense that far better. But, by the end of your day, it certainly doesnt matter whos on the market. Theyve surely got to complete the job and weve surely got to see improvement during the period of another week and in to the preseason games.

The Packers will open the preseason at SAN FRANCISCO BAY AREA on Friday night.

NOTES: Attendance was announced at 50,112. … LaFleur canceled the final period because his team was banged up following a fifth consecutive day of practice. … One offensive highlight was backup quarterback Jordan Loves long touchdown pass to Samori Toure.
