Sen. Klobuchar says Trump ” isn’t king” after Mar-a-Lago raid

Sen. Amy Klobuchar (D-Minn.) emphasized on Sunday that “regulations is king” rather than the president, because the FBI’s search of former President Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago home raised questions about if the former president committed crimes.

The picture as a whole: The FBI recovered 11 sets of classified documents after searching the former president’s Mar-a-Lago home on Monday.

Driving the news headlines: Klobuchar told NBC’s “Meet up with the Press” that it might be around the Justice Department to find out whether Trump’s actions rise to the amount of a crime, but added that “everyone must follow the laws.”

  • “Regulations is king,” Klobuchar said. “The president isn’t king. And I’d increase that, the former president isn’t king.”
  • “As a senator, I understand when I consider the classified documents, I’ve surely got to go in a particular room,” she added. “I cannot even wear my Fitbit. You can’t bring staff with you.”
  • Klobuchar noted these forms of documents support the nation’s top secrets, that could be used to accomplish harm.
  • “That is why it really is so important these documents stay in safe locations,” she said. “And Mar-a-Lago, where one can have a look at croquet sets and tennis rackets and clubs, that’s not one of these.”

Additional information: Klobuchar also said she actually is worried about Republicans’ reaction to the search, as much in the party have cast it as a politically motivated attack.

  • “I thought back many years ago the Republican Party used to stand with police,” Klobuchar said. “I am hoping a number of them do today because this sort of rhetoric is quite dangerous to your country.”
  • She noted that FBI director Christopher Wray was appointed by Trump.
  • “That little bit of it really is so very important to visitors to understand,” she said. “That is beyond politics. They’re simply doing their jobs. And we must let them do their jobs.”
