Serena Williams announces her retirement from tennis

Tennis legend Serena Williams announced her retirement in a Vogue article published Tuesday.

“I’ve never liked the word’retirement,'” Williams wrote. “Maybe the very best word to spell it out what I’m around is’evolution.’I’m here to inform you that I’m evolving from tennis, toward other activities that are vital that you me.”

Williams, who turns 41 the following month, has 73 career singles titles, 23 career doubles titles and over $94 million in career winnings.

Williams is widely hailed among the greatest athletes ever. In her Vogue piece, she noted that a few of her detractors explain that she hasn’t won probably the most Grand Slam titles in women’s tennis history, however.

“I never wished to have to select from tennis and a family group. I don’t believe it’s fair,” Williams wrote. “EASILY were a man, I wouldn’t be writing this because I’d be on the market playing and winning while my partner was doing the physical labor of expanding us.”

Williams centered on her family in the announcement, writing that her nearly five-year-old daughter really wants to be a mature sister. Williams is married to Reddit founder Alexis Ohanian.

“I must focus on being truly a mom, my spiritual goals and lastly discovering another, but just exciting Serena. I’m gonna relish these next couple of weeks,” Williams wrote within an Instagram post Tuesday.

Professionally, she looks to expand Serena Ventures, a little investment firm of six individuals who was among the first investors in MasterClass. Her firm raised $111 million in outside financing this season.

Williams wrote that only 2% of capital raising would go to women and that “to ensure that us to improve that, more folks who appear to be me have to be for the reason that position, giving cash back to themselves.”
