Stop using BeReal like Instagram

A few of you’re using BeReal the way it had been intended to be utilized. For that, I applaud you. However, many of you’re using it in an exceedingly, very wrong way. You people know who you’re.

For all those unfamiliar, BeReal is really a social networking thats an anti-social network in lots of ways. The app sends a notification to all or any users at a randomized time, informing them that its time and energy to BeReal. Theoretically, users open BeReal soon after receiving this notification, have a photo of whatever they are actually doing in those days, and post it to the app. You cant see anyone elses BeReals and soon you post your personal.

In some recoverable format, its the contrary of Instagram. The latter app is notoriously curated people fill it with beautiful, carefully edited photos of themselves doing glamorous things with large sets of adoring friends. You post your very best moments and, crucially, usually do not post other things.

But BeReal cant be curated or at the very least, the intention is that it not be. Its the real you. A scroll through Instagram could make you are feeling like youre the only person spending your Friday night watching Netflix on your own bed while everybody else is out out, but a scroll through BeReal reminds you that youre not by yourself. Its oddly comforting its possibly the most reliable online cure for FOMO there’s.

At the very least, thats the intention.

But BeReal includes a fatal flaw that I really believe is heavily interfering using its mission: the BeReal notification doesnt expire. When you might not post a BeReal prior to the notification is out, you might post one any moment after the notification is out (before following days alert does, needless to say).

As a result, there is hardly any stopping folks from by using this app the same way they use Instagram stories. That’s, regardless of once the BeReal notification is out, they consistently post at 8PM roughly every night if they are inevitably doing something exciting. Plus they find yourself with a BeReal thats filled with artistic photos of coffee cups, martini glasses, beach sunsets, and selfies with friends in glitzy locales a curated reel designed to impress their followers. Basically, Instagram stories.

I’m seeing this among people I understand (sorry, people I understand), but Im also a frequent scroller of the general public Discovery feed, which is actually a style that is growing over the platform.(And my frustration is not these folks are doing fancier things at 8PM than I’m deposit the pitchforks, comments-section denizens.)

Now, I’m not criticizing late BeReals in themselves. We have been not absolutely all always available once the notification appears I myself post BeReals which are a couple of hours late every once in awhile. However the people Im discussing aren’t doing that. Rather, they’re intentionally, consistently ignoring the timing of the BeReal notification and choosing to create their posts at the high points of these day. I really do not think it is a blurry or subjective line. You understand in case you are in this category. You understand it perfectly.

I am aware why you all wish to accomplish this. The instincts that made Instagram the FOMO monster it really is usually do not magically disappear when youre utilizing a different app. Still, I really do believe this behavior is harmful its antithetical to the appeal that drew a lot of us to BeReal to begin with.

Do BeReal like Barbara, nothing like an Instagram influencer.

Here’s my case: Once you join BeReal, you enter a social contract. I, as your fellow BeReal user, am opening section of myself for you. I’m showing you that I’m not truly the individual you see on Instagram. I’m showing you myself shameless, bare, boring because I expect that it could enable you to get some comfort.

And surely, thats the reason why you joined BeReal, too, hypothetical BeReal Instagrammer. You joined as you had an itch that Instagram wasnt scratching. Some section of you wished to look out of the internets cesspool of curated bullshit, too and thats the only real thing that BeReal has promised to supply.

But that should be a two-way street. I open the mundane elements of my life for you because I am hoping that you’ll open yours if you ask me. We are able to be each others cure for the FOMO we have been the very best weapons we’ve. But Im requesting to give a few of what youre taking.

BeReal users feel safe showing their boring, ugly selves on the app because other folks are carrying it out, too. We blend in to the sea. There’s power in solidarity. The more the app is overrun with parties and artsy wine cocktails, the less comfortable everyone who would like to use it because of its intended purpose will feel doing this. And then we shall all lose the initial appeal that drew us to BeReal to begin with. We shall just have a much worse, much buggier Instagram on our hands.
