Texas mandates donated “In God We Trust” displays in schools

Texas schools have started receiving posters of the national motto “In God We Trust” that they can be asked to display relative to a fresh state law.

The picture as a whole: Those opposed are sounding the alarm concerning the law, arguing it imposes religion on students and flies when confronted with the expectation that schools be secular.

The law, that was passed this past year, says elementary and secondary schools must “display in a conspicuous invest each building of the institution or institution a durable poster or framed copy of america national motto” if the signs were donated to the institution district or bought with private donations and directed at the district.

What they’re saying: “We just felt enjoy it was an excellent possibility to display our national motto inside our public schools,” state Rep. Tom Oliverson (R), who co-authored the bill, told KHOU.

  • “This is a concept I had after seeing something similar happen in a couple of different states.”

Another side: These posters demonstrate the more casual ways circumstances can impose religion on the general public, Sophie Ellman-Golan of Jews For Racial & Economic Justice (JFREJ) told the Guardian.

  • Alone, theyre a simple violation of the separation of church and state. However in the broader context, its hard never to see them within the larger Christian nationalist project.

The city group Southlake Anti-Racism Coalition issued a statement following the Carroll Independent School District received posters to set up each school there, per CNN.

  • “SARC is disturbed by the precedent displaying these posters atlanta divorce attorneys school will set and the chilling effect this blatant intrusion of religion in what ought to be a secular public institution could have on the student body, especially those that usually do not practice the dominant Christian faith,” the group wrote.

Worth noting: Several states have passed similar laws requiring the display of the motto recently.
