The Callisto Protocol director apologizes after appearing to glorify crunch culture

A hot potato: Crunch culture, the word used to spell it out the lots of of (often mandatory) overtime worked by those in the gaming industry, is definitely a controversial subject that lots of consumers and employees rally against. In a now-deleted tweet, the director of upcoming horror title The Callisto Protocol wrote: “We r working 6-7 days weekly, nobody’s forcing us. Exhaustion, tired, Covid but we’re working. Bugs, glitches, perf fixes. 1 last pass thru audio. 12-15 hr days. That is gaming. Effort. Lunch, dinner working. U Take action cause ya luv it.”

The tweet generated a lot of replies, the vast majority of them negative. It’s possible for a company’s founder and boss to speak about working every waking hour since they love something, however, not all employees share these sentiments. Stories concerning the crunch culture problem have permeated the gaming industry for a long time. For example the months of extended hours, including six-day weeks, worked at CD Projekt Red since it rushed to complete Cyberpunk 2077, regardless of the studio’s previous claims that type of overtime wouldn’t normally be mandatory. Crunch was also reported to be a large problem at Bungie and Rockstar.
