The Padres’ newest dugout guest … a black panther?

2: 14 AM UTC

MIAMI — This past year, there was the house run chain. This season, its been the polaroids. On Wednesday afternoon in Miami, there is a fresh addition to the Padres home run celebration: a big black panther statue.

The statue, which includes lived in the Padres clubhouse and been looked after on road trips by its handler, reliever Robert Suarez, made its first appearance in the dugout during San Diegos 10-3 victory at loanDepot park.

I don’t even understand where it originated from, it just arrived 1 day, said Jake Cronenworth, who hit a grand slam in the initial inning to provide the Padres a lead they never relinquished. Following the slam, the next of Cronenworths career, he posed with the big cat for his home run polaroid.

We were attempting to bring a fresh spark in the clubhouse, and Feisty Tom appeared to have a small amount of that in him, said starting pitcher Mike Clevinger, who allowed three runs on six hits and four walks over 4 1/3 innings.

It had been Sean Manaea who dubbed the panther Feisty Tom, also it was likely Manaea (in accordance with Cronenworth) who was simply in charge of Tom being in the dugout for Wednesdays matinee.

Manaea denied he had anything regarding Toms appearance.

No no, not me, he said. He just arrived [in the dugout] honestly. I walked on the market [today] and he was on the market, I was like, ‘Feisty Tom, what’s going on?’ That’s his name, at the very least that’s what I keep calling him.

First name that found my head. Usually, that’s how I name things, you understand, comes from the center. [Cats, they] prefer to be secretive sometimes, now he just wished to smell the new Miami air.

Wednesday was a fitting time for the big cat and potential spark plug to create an appearance. Cronenworths slam marked the initial lead the Padres had held on the Marlins in the three-game series and was the highlight of an inning filled up with the offensive prowess seemingly absent from the initial two games of the set.

It started with back-to-back singles from Juan Soto — who extended his on-base streak to 22 games — and Manny Machado, who had his eighth multi-hit game in a row. Then Josh Bell gave a masterclass in patience, loading the bases after he fouled off a fastball on a 3-2 count, then took a higher four-seamer for the two-out walk. Then, the Crone Zone.

[The early lead] became worthwhile today for certain, Clevinger said. But yeah, it always offers you a little reassurance, lets you sort of make an effort to attack the zone a bit more. I was just having a small amount of issue locating the zone today.

Clevingers issues locating the zone — which take into account the righty recording just one single strikeout on the night time — didnt matter much because of the lead Crone handed him before he even took the mound. Plus, Clevinger had some help from the bullpen.

Adrian Morejon struck out some after loading the bases with a hit-by-pitch when he entered in the fifth. Four relievers (including Morejon) combined for 4 2/3 shutout innings, and allowed just one single hit, which came in the seventh vs. Suarez.

Suarez allowed a leadoff single to Jon Berti before striking out some and inducing a groundout to obtain out from the seventh unscathed. That has been the Marlins only attempt at a rally, also it was squashed as quickly since it started.

The Padres werent quieted so easily, stringing together hits and walks in the very best of the ninth carrying out a leadoff double from Bell, who entered the overall game 0-for-his-past-23. Several batters later, sufficient reason for the bases loaded, Ha-Seong Kim hit a bases-clearing double.

Those things [especially walks] finished up not being the sexiest part of the box score, but finished up providing us better at-bats and much more production from then on, manager Bob Melvin said.

When asked concerning the big cat hes in charge of, Suarez said that had no idea how it experienced the dugout or where it originated from.

I don’t really have confidence in luck, Suarez said via an interpreter. Nevertheless, you know, if another guys think it brings us all the best, then I can make sure to deal with it.

Feisty Tom occurs board and just, you understand, it is a good presence in the dugout, Manaea said, though he wouldnt grab the panther for an image when asked by way of a reporter.

I dont really wreck havoc on big cats like this.
