We’re quite definitely looking towards seeing what Samsung has waiting for you for us using its Galaxy S23 flagship next year, and the rumor is that the trunk camera may be obtaining a major upgrade: completely around 200MP for the primary sensor on the Ultra model, if the most recent leak is usually to be believed.

This originates from ET News (opens in new tab) (via Android Police (opens in new tab)), and is apparently predicated on information that the Samsung Electronics’ Mobile Experience (MX) division has been sharing using its industry partners.

We realize that 200MP sensors are real the Samsung ISOCELL HP1 already features in the Moto X30 Pro, for instance however the question is if Samsung will opt to include it in a single or even more of its flagship smartphones in 2023.

A long-running rumor

This is not the very first time that rumor has emerged, and it’s really actually been swirling since this past year. The sources with this are ones which are usually reliable, so that it looks likely that should come to pass though there is nothing certain until it’s official.

If it can come in the Samsung Galaxy S23 range, the 200MP sensor is apparently only likely to arrive in the Ultra model. That matches the Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra, that includes a 108MP main sensor pitched against a 50MP main sensor in another models.

Everything will undoubtedly be revealed next year, and at this time it looks as if February would be the month once the Galaxy S23 sees the light of day and we’re saying February primarily because that is the month once the Galaxy S22 premiered.

Analysis: this is of megapixels

More megapixels means more pixels in your final image, this means it could be inflated to bigger sizes without the loss in quality or at the very least that is the theory. However, megapixels is merely one portion of the story with regards to camera phone quality.

It is also in what manufacturers can perform with those pixels, even though Samsung has traditionally been very good using its camera setups, it is important never to assume a phone camera will be great because it’s packing in more megapixels.

As we’ve discussed before, all sorts of other factors enter into play aswell, like the size of the pixels (that is an indicator of just how much light they are able to capture. We’ll need to wait until we’ve tested the Galaxy S23 Ultra to observe how impressive the camera setup is.

And understand that 200MP sensors don’t indicate 200MP photos cameras work with a technology called pixel binning to boost image quality, where data from multiple pixels gets combined, therefore the end results tend to be smaller compared to the sensor might suggest.
