Folks have been exploring the top of Mars forover 50 years. Based on theUS Office for SPACE Affairs, nations have sent18 human-made objects to Marsover 14 separate missions. Several missions remain ongoing, but on the decades of Martian exploration, humankind has left out many bits of debris on the planets surface.

I’m apostdoctoral research fellowwho studies methods to track Mars and Moon rovers. In mid-August 2022, NASA confirmed that the Mars rover Perseverance had spotted a bit of trash jettisoned during its landing, this time around a tangled mess of netting. Which is not the very first time scientists have discovered trash on Mars. Thats since there is a whole lot there.
Where does the debris result from?
Debris on Mars originates from three main sources: discarded hardware, inactive spacecraft and crashed spacecraft.
Every mission to the Martian surface takes amodulethat protects the spacecraft. This module carries a heat shield for once the craft passes through the planets atmosphere and a parachute and landing hardware such that it can land softly.
The craft discards bits of the module since it descends, and these pieces can land in various locations on the planets surface there could be a lesser heat shield in a single place and a parachute in another. When this debris crashes to the bottom, it can break right into smaller pieces, ashappened through the Perseverance rover landing in 2021. These small pieces may then get blown around due to Martian winds.
Plenty of small, windblown trash has been found on the yearslike thenetting materialfound recently. Earlier in the entire year, on June 13, 2022, Perseverance rover spotted a big, shiny thermal blanket wedged in a few rocks 1.25 miles (2 km) from where in fact the rover landed. BothCuriosity in 2012andOpportunity in 2005also found debris from their landing vehicles.
Dead and crashed spacecraft
Thenine inactive spacecraft at first glance of Marsconstitute the next kind of debris. These craft will be the Mars 3 lander, Mars 6 lander, Viking 1 lander, Viking 2 lander, the Sojourner rover, theformerly lost Beagle 2 lander, the Phoenix lander, the Spirit rover and probably the most recently deceased spacecraft, the chance rover. Mostly intact, these may be better considered historical relics than trash.
Deterioration take their toll on everything on the Martian surface. Some elements ofCuriositys aluminum wheels have broken offand so are presumably scattered across the rovers track. A number of the litter is purposeful, with Perseverancehaving dropped a drill bit onto the topin July 2021, and canswap in a fresh, pristine bitsuch that it can keep collecting samples.
Crashed spacecraft and their pieces are another significant way to obtain trash. At the very least two spacecraft have crashed, and yet another four have lost contact before or simply after landing. Safely descending to the planets surface may be the hardest section of any Mars landing missionand itdoesnt always end well.
Once you accumulate the mass of most spacecraft which have ever been delivered to Mars, you obtain about 22,000 pounds (9979 kilograms). Subtract the weight of the currently operational craft on the surface6,306 pounds (2,860 kilograms)and you also are left with 15,694 pounds (7,119 kilograms) of human debris on Mars.
How come trash matter?
Today, the primary concern scientists have about trash on Mars may be the risk it poses to current and future missions. The Perseverance teams are documenting all debris they find and checking to see if some of it might contaminate the samples the rover is collecting. NASA engineers also have considered whether Perseverance could easily get tangled in debris from the landing but haveconcluded the chance is low.
The true reason debris on Mars is essential is due to its invest history. The spacecraft and their pieces will be the early milestones for human planetary exploration.
