THE PLANET Health Organization’s COVID chief said Friday it had been time for possible check on the herpes virus following the millionth death from the condition this season.
Maria Van Kerkhove, the WHO’s technical lead COVID-19, said the toll was “heartbreaking” as the tests, treatments, vaccines and public health measures to regulate the condition were all available.
“Given we’re in the 3rd year of the pandemic, it’s… even more so tragic considering that we have the various tools that may actually prevent these deaths,” she told a live interaction on the WHO’s social media marketing channels.
“Most of us have grown to be numb to the numbers.
“We are in need of possible check. We should take stock of where we have been. We ought to not maintain a posture with 14,000 or 15,000 people dying weekly. We just shouldn’t.”
Van Kerkhove insisted that the pandemic had not been over, nonetheless it could be taken to a finish while people continue steadily to live their daily lives.
“We simply need to put just a little extra thought into that, to be a little more careful,” she said.
“Many people are discussing coping with COVID. But we have to live with this particular responsibly.
“A million deaths this season is not coping with COVID. Having 15,000 deaths weekly is not coping with COVID-19 responsibly.”
Nearly 6.45 million deaths have already been reported to the WHO because the virus was initially detected in China in late 2019.
A lot more than 5.3 million new cases were reported to the UN health agency the other day.
“They are huge numbers, and that is an underestimate,” said Van Kerkhove, with home testing not being reflected in surveillance data.
“We do see this virus circulating really intensely all over the world.
“The herpes virus isn’t going away, unfortunately.”
