Trains Collide in Croatia, Killing at the very least 3, Injuring 11

ZAGREB, CroatiaA passenger train and freight train collided Friday night in central Croatia, killing at the very least three people and injuring another 11 or even more, authorities said.

The collision happened around 9: 30 p.m. close to the town of Novska, that is near Croatias border with Bosnia, police said in a statement.

The impact was huge, said Prime Minister Andrej Plenkovic, who rushed to the scene with other government officials.

Plenkovic confirmed that up to now bodies of three individuals were found at the website of the accident, but he said more victims could be within the morning.

The injured have already been hospitalized, some with serious injuries but none in life-threatening condition, he added.

Its nighttime, there is absolutely no light, we dont know right now if you can find more victims, said Plenkovic.

The reason for the collision had not been immediately clear.

The passenger train was an area line carrying 13 people, while only the engine driver was in the freight train, said Plenkovic. He said foreign citizens were on the list of injured.

Officials said both trains were pushed off the rails following the collision. A study has been launched to find out what caused the collision.
