July 31 (UPI) — The U.S. Navy held a commissioning ceremony in Florida because of its newest amphibious transport dock ship, the USS Fort Lauderdale.
“To the Sailors and Marines who’ll serve aboard USS Fort Lauderdale, many thanks as well as your families beforehand for the service you’ll fulfill and sacrifices you might endure,” Navy Secretary Carlos Del Toro said Saturday.
“As soon as you bring this amphibious transport dock alive, you will fortify the integrated deterrence capacity for our entire Joint Force.”
The commissioning may be the ceremony that marks the state transition of the ship in to the fleet. It had been christened in August 2021 before it had been sent to the U.S. Navy last November and, though it really is named following the southern Florida city, it’ll be homeported at Naval Station Norfolk in Virginia
Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz, D-Fla., served because the principal speaker through the ceremony and said it had been “an honor to be engaged” with the commissioning of the warship, in accordance with a Navy news release.
“It’s another chapter to the momentous history, friendship, and respect that the town has with the U.S. Navy,” the lawmaker said.
“My support for the military is unwavering. I’ll always the stand by position our service members and veterans, and honor those that continue steadily to serve.”
Meredith Berget, the assistant Navy Secretary for energy, installations and environment, sponsored the ship and gave the initial order to “man our ship and bring her alive.”
“The Navy names ships for folks, places, and ideas which are special. The Navy certainly picked a particular place when naming the USS Fort Lauderdale,” Berger said. “I’m honored to function as sponsor because of this incredible ship.”
The USS Fort Lauderdale is really a San Antonio-class ship made to transport around 700 Marines and their equipment to aid amphibious assault, special operations and expeditionary warfare missions.
