UFC 278’s Jared Gordon keeps it real: ‘MMA doesn’t give me any fulfillment whatsoever’

SALT LAKE CITY Jared Gordon still must compete Saturday at UFC 278, but as will happen during media sessions three days beforehand, he was asked in what he wants next before his fight even plays out.

In a nutshell, the native New Yorker said he really wants to fight at Madison Square Garden, that may host UFC 281 in November. If he happens of his fight Leonardo Santos without serious injury, the timeline can work out.

Gordon rattled off a listing of explanations why fighting at MSG is his destiny, but one of these stood right out of the rest.

I used to shoot dope in the toilet down the block from Madison Square Garden, Gordon said Wednesday.

Gordons past drug addiction has been well documented, but hes were able to stick to the straight-and-narrow since joining the UFC in 2017. And at UFC 278, hell be seeking to rebound from the submission loss to Grant Dawson in his last fight.

Given his troubled history, one might think Gordon is fulfilled by competing in MMA at the best level, that possibly the sport and being in the UFC have helped him stay sober. But that couldnt be further from the reality.

MMA hasnt helped me at all. Actually its made my entire life worse. Im not joking, Gordon said. MMA doesnt give me any fulfillment whatsoever. Im in a position to use my platform to greatly help people through MMA, but whether I win or lose, three days later Im miserable again.

Gordonwent to liken the knowledge to be a fighter compared to that of a drug addict and cautioned his counterparts about getting swept up inside it.

Its like drugs. Ive surely got to search for another fix. Fine, whats next? You view it on a regular basis, Gordon said. This business become multiple-time world champions, and theyre fighting to their 40s searching for that the next thing. Theyre attempting to fill a void. The thing that fills my void is God, my children, my partner, my relationships, and helping other folks. Thats the thing that provides me fulfillment, is helping other folks. THEREFORE I need UFC which platform to greatly help others.

If Logan Paul or Jake, whatever his name is, and Floyd (Mayweather) and Conor McGregor no offense, Im not attempting to put them down. But should they were preaching about mental health insurance and addiction, just how many people would listen? I dont have a platform like they do. The target is to make it happen. Theyre driving around in Lamborghini boats and flashing chains. All my shiny sh*t doesnt do anything for me personally my car, Im wearing a Rolex at this time. Im wearing this simply for this (interview). I love it, but its such as a burden on my entire life. Im still paying it off. Ive owned it for per year. Its an encumbrance on my entire life. Fighting, I really like fighting techinques. Its my passion. I really like competing. Its not for me personally. None of the is for me personally. Its for individuals Im attempting to help.

Gordon (18-5 MMA, 6-4 UFC), 33, meets Santos (18-5-1 MMA, 7-2-1 UFC) on the UFC 278 prelims before the pay-per-view main card. Before losing to Dawson, Gordon was on a three-fight winning streak.
