United Makes $10M Deposit on 100 Flying Taxis From Archer

Archer Aviation received a$10 million predelivery paymentfrom United Airlines for 100 electric flying taxis, the startup said Wednesday. The move may be the latest in some steps by commercial air companies to purchase the brand new hybrid aviation technology.

California-based Archer Aviation is one of the companies wanting to produce and authorize electric vertical takeoff and landing aircraft for commercial flights. eVTOLs are hybrids that remove and land such as a helicopter and so are designed to be utilized for short-distance travel across cities.

As a fresh technology, eVTOLs like those produced by Archer need approval from federal regulators to begin with commercial service and invite companies like United to formally purchase aircraft. In anews release, Archer said it recently completed its preliminary design review process and is currently advancing to another development phase. THE UNITED STATES Federal Aviation Administration has said recent regulatory shiftsto the certification process for eVTOLs shouldn’t prevent companies from gaining certification by the finish of 2024.

United previously announced plans to get around 200 flying taxis from Archer, a dealworth $1 billion. United isn’t the only real commercial airline to purchase eVTOL travel. This past year, American Airlines said it had plans to get $25 million in Vertical Aerospace Group, a UK-based eVTOL startup.

Michael Leskinen, president of United Airlines Ventures, spoke concerning the predelivery paymentin a statement, emphasizing the prospect of eVTOLs to create convenience to customers while reducing carbon emissions for the business.

“We believe eVTOLs have the potential to both help achieve carbon-neutral travel and serve being an latest tool to improve how United customers experience comfort, convenience and efficiency throughout their commutes within cities around the world,” he said.

The announcement was reported earlier by The Wall Street Journal.
