Video Gamers Are Better Decision-Makers

July 28, 2022 Playing action video gaming seems to boost brain activity and decision-making skills.

In a report that coupled brain imaging with a decision-making task, university students who play video gaming regularly made faster and much more accurate decisions than peers who rarely play video gaming.

“Video gaming are played by the overwhelming most our youth a lot more than 3 hours weekly, however the beneficial effects on decision-making abilities and the mind aren’t exactly known,” lead investigator Mukesh Dhamala, PhD, of the Georgia State University Neuroscience Institute, said in a news release.

The brand new study begins to reveal how gaming playing can transform the brain to boost task performance, said Dhamala and GSU co-investigator Timothy Jordan, PhD.

The researchers recruited 47 university students: 28 of whom reported playing action video gaming for at the very least 5 hours weekly in the last 24 months, and 19 non-gamers who averaged significantly less than 1 hour weekly.

During brain imaging, these were given a computerized decision-making task. These were asked to press a button within their right or left hand to point the direction dots were moving or resist pressing either button if there wasnt any movement.

The video gamers were faster and much more accurate making use of their responses compared to the non-gamers. The gamers also had stronger activity in a few parts of the mind.

“It has not been proven before,” Dhamala and Jordan say.

Previous brain imaging studies have suggested there could be benefits from video gaming on attention, visual perception, and memory, but an obvious behavior-brain relation and the consequences in decision-making processes were lacking.

Jordan wasnt surprised by the outcomes of the analysis.

As a kid, he previously weak vision in a single eye. Within a study study when he was about 5 yrs . old, he covered his good eye and played video gaming to fortify the vision in the weak one.

Jordan credits gaming training with assisting to create a strong convenience of his brain to process what he saw, allowing him to eventually play lacrosse and paintball.

Stephen Faraone, PhD, with State University of NY Upstate Medical University in Syracuse, can be not surprised by the findings.

“Playing video gaming can alter the mind in a fashion that improves some cognitive skills,” he says, after having seen the outcomes.

The caveat, he says, is that no well-designed clinical trial shows these changes in the mind result in improvements in real-world skills, like school performance.

Its also unclear just how long one must train with video gaming to get new decision-making skills.

“Much like all the things, it should be done in moderation. Playing an excessive amount of can sometimes result in addiction exactly like whatever affects our brains, especially young peoples developing brains,” Dhamala and Jordan say.
