Walker’s bat, Kelly’s arm lead Diamondbacks past Brewers 5-0

PHOENIX (AP) Over time of floundering at or close to the bottom of the NL West, the Arizona Diamondbacks are needs to look like a fairly good baseball team.

Christian Walker hit a two-run homer, Merrill Kelly pitched seven stellar innings and the D-backs beat the Milwaukee Brewers 5-0 on Thursday night for his or her sixth win previously seven games.

It continues a roll theyve enjoyed for days gone by six weeks. Theyre 22-16 because the All-Star break and also have moved into third invest the division, passing the Giants and Rockies.

That may not look like much, but also for a team that lost 110 games last season, its a massive improvement.

If we play just how were playing at this time, we can be considered a good team, Kelly said. I believe if we finish the entire year this last month and sort of bear down and play just how which were playing, itll leave an excellent taste in everybodys mouth returning for next year and continue.

Walker hammered his 31st homer to deep left in the initial inning off Milwaukees Brandon Woodruff, giving the D-backs a 2-0 lead. Geraldo Perdomos RBI single in the 3rd pushed the benefit to 3-0 and Josh Rojas smashed a two-run double high off the guts field wall in the sixth to create it 5-0.

Its plenty of little things are occurring within each at-bat, D-backs manager Torey Lovullo said. Its a stubborn approach. Its an all-field approach. We are able to start the baseball and drive it and were fairly unpredictable. We dont turn off and were relocating the proper direction.

All five runs was included with two outs and Rojas double chased Woodruff (9-4) from the overall game. The right-hander quit five earned runs on eight hits over 5 2/3 innings. He walked two and struck out four.

I didnt quite have my nutrients tonight, Woodruff said. So that it was sort of a battle.

While Arizonas offense was methodical, Kelly (12-5) was dominant. The right-hander flashed the proper execution that made him NL Pitcher of the Month in July, quitting only four hits no walks while striking out seven. Caleb Smith closed the overall game with two scoreless innings of relief.

The D-backs have won six of these last seven, pushing to 62-68 for the growing season. Theyre 22-16 because the All-Star break.

Milwaukee slipped to 69-61 and fell to 6 1/2 games behind the St. Louis Cardinals for the very best of the NL Central. Jace Peterson led the Brewers with two hits.

Counsell said that following the Brewers didn’t capitalize on several offensive opportunities in the initial couple innings, there wasnt much the offense could do against Kelly.

Hes having an excellent year, hes been pitching effectively, Counsell said. In the initial inning, we got in a few good counts with 3 or 4 guys, but couldnt do anything with that. In the next inning, he improved. He then got locked in. Thats just what a good starting pitcher does.

Milwaukees Christian Yelich left the overall game following the third inning due to what the team called neck discomfort. He was replaced by Tyrone Taylor.

Irritated his neck using one of his swings for the reason that second at-bat, Counsell said. Hes daily.

Counsell added that theres the opportunity he misses a couple of days, but I wouldnt be worried about it past that.
