What sort of 27-Year-Old Consultant Eats on $225K/Year in Washington, D.C.

7: 58 p.m. Magpie and the Tiger, a fresh restaurant serving Korean American food, reaches the very best of both my and my boyfriends to consume list, so we book our Saturday date night reservation there. I havent eaten an effective meal all day long, and we find yourself ordering a lot of the menu. For drinks, I order the Matcha Sunset, a cocktail with grapefruit, yuzu, habanero, and matcha that comes virgin off the menu, but is not any longer that whenever I add soju to it ($9.00 virgin, $16.00 with alcohol). My boyfriend orders a bottle of Hana Makgeolli Takju ($48.00), a Korean rice wine, for all of us to split. Starters are the focaccia di recco ($13.00), that is similar to a scallion pancake, and the mala tteokbokki ($16), an especially spicy version of the Korean rice-cake snack. They are accompanied by the yachae bokkum ($15.00), manufactured from bok choy, mushrooms, and a 63-degree egg, and the lobster ginger-scallion guksu ($47.00). The noodles have a softly chewy bite and so are not doused in much sauce, which really allows them to shine; they’re among the best noodles I’ve had in recent memory.

The star of the show may be the whole rib kalbi ($68.00), which serves the beef sliced off the bone and includes umami rice, ssamjang, and red-leaf lettuce. I was raised eating ssm in the home, but this is actually the tastiest Korean barbecue lettuce wrap that Ive encountered. I mustve stopped participating in conversation, because my boyfriend informs me you merely entered another world after my third wrap. I understand this dish is really a winner because my boyfriend, whom I’ve never seen take leftovers from the meal, asked because of this to be wrapped (no pun intended). Dessert may be the ube hotteok ($9), an ube ice cream along with a warm doughnut. Our check includes two shortbread cookies in the form of magpie birds, and is $306.24, $20.00 which I’ve already covered when I made our reservation, and the rest which is included in my boyfriend. Again, relationship equity.

11 p.m. Our final stop of the night time reaches LAnnexe, a cocktail bar in Georgetown that serves probably the most unique drinks Ive seen. We usually come across our friends here, and also have also befriended its management. We often partake in a team meeting (a round of tequila shots) with the bar staff whenever we come. I once brought pandan and activated charcoal as drink ingredients, merely to see what LAnnexe could develop. (I believe the latter is benign in small doses, but beware that it could be a medication disruptor.) Soon afterward, these were both on the menuthe pandan in a glass or two called Spruce Banner, which include gin, arak, mastiha, chartreuse, cucumber, lemon, mint, and the activated charcoal in a glass or two named Esmoquin, featuring mezcal, crme de cacao, and orange bitters. Im not saying Im in charge of this, but Im not not. Among the chefs at Chez Billy Sud, a nearby French bistro, even liked it so much he asked the LAnnexe staff how this drink found beand he then came around me in the bar to thank me for helping create it. Tonight, the bar manager brings us a round of champagne upon arrival, in fact it is this service and familiarity that keeps us returning. I devote an order for Honeydew YOU LIKE Me ($18.00), a frothy gin drink with notes of melon and a soft green hue, which might now be the best drink ever. I grab the look for the both folks and tip extra, so that it happens to $50.00.

Saturday total: $70.00
