Because the main arc of Dreams captivity and artifact quest closes in The Sandmans middle episodes, the series gives solution to an anthological structure, imitative of the comics and allowing viewers to meet up characters only briefly featured in the series source material. One of the most prominent of the figures, Hob Gadling, appears in Episode 6, The Sound of Her Wingsa mention of Death and her winged silhouette, seen many times off screen apparently sheepherding souls to the afterlife.
In the same way in the comics, Dream meets Hob in a pub. What ensues: a centuries-long game of Is Life Worth Living?Dream endowing Hob with immortality (barring some vague type of violent death), and giving him the decision every one century to continue the overall game, or follow Death to the grave.
The immortality experiment, which resembles that of folklore and religious literature, continues on for a few 600 years, Hob seemingly not done livingdespite losing his friends and family many times over. The experiments outcome is somewhat surprising, given the subjects treatment across other narrative forms; immortality is usually a curse in fantastic literature. In The Sandman, immortality is really a boonat least for Hob, whos life-affirming sentiment results in an evergrowing friendship with Dream, often chided for having little look after the mortals he serves.
In the comics, the experiment also becomes an extended friendship, tested by exactly the same charge created by Hob in the 1800s when he suggests, to Dreams disgust, that Dream is lonely and looking for friendship. In both series and the comics, Dream returns later having an apology: I was always told it really is bad manners to help keep one’s friends waiting.
Who plays Hob Gadling?
Hob is played by Ferdinand Kingsley, 34, the son of English actor Sir Ben Kingsley. (Netflix viewers may recognize Kingsley as Irving Thalberg from David Fincher’s Mank.)
Kingsley originally auditioned to play the lead role of Dream. Following the audition, he was asked to learn for Hob. Kingsley, a long-time fan of the comics, says he was amazed to then be cast. His role allowed him to witness one of the most intricate set design changes through the entire entire season, with one pub reimagined to exist in a number of different centuries.
Within an interview with GameRant, Kingsley described set designer Jon Steeles work.
The team would build one setone pubthat we were shooting in, and nearby to it, that they had exactly the same pub nonetheless it was for another century. A couple of days later, we head to shoot on that certain. Then they disassemble one that we were in before and build it for another century. It had been amazing. There is 1 day when I walked directly into this medieval pub with goats and dogs, and fires and food, and much more people than I’d observed in in regards to a year . 5 since it was in the center of the international meltdown, and I thought, “God, this is actually the dream.”
