Where Jackson and April Rank Among Grey’s Anatomy’s Most Epic Romances

Sarah Drew Talks Time for Grey’s Anatomy for 400th Episode

Japril is back, baby!

The growing season 18 finale of Grey’s Anatomywas filled up with enough drama and upheaval to create even the very best surgeon’s head spin, nonetheless it left fans with a minumum of one lasting little bit of very good news: Jackson and Aprilhave rekindled their romance. And, due to this reunion, Japril were qualified to be nominated in the favourite Couple category for the 2022 TV Scoop Awards. (It is possible to vote here.)

So, how did the big reunion play out?

We knew that Jackson (Jesse Williams) and April (Sarah Drew) would be returning for the big episode, but we didn’t know hawaii of these relationship. Whenever we last saw Japril in season 17, that they had moved to Boston so Jacksoncould run the Catherine Fox Foundation and April could possibly be near their daughter, though they remained separated.

After Jackson returned so that they can save the Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital’s teaching program, he and Aprilshared an elevator kissin the finale’s fleeting momentsand we finally got the solution. We have confidence in love again!

Despite our sheer relief that Jackson and April have managed to get work in Beantown, it is best never to get too worked up about seeing them around moving forwardat least not full-time.

“It will be leaves open the chance that you may be checking in using them,” Sarah told Deadline. “Following the script premiered, I had texts flying in from cast and crew asking easily was returning next year due to the way the episode ends. But as of this moment that’s not up for grabs.”

We’ll take what we are able to get.

Full-time returns to Grey’s seemed unlikely anyway,as Jesse and Sarah have plenty on the plates. Jesse was nominated for a Tony Award for his performance in Take Me Out,which includes also seen its share of controversy. Meanwhile, Sarah isstarring alongside Bonnie Hunt in Amber Brown, which premiered on Apple TV+ in July.

Whether we see them again or not, we’re just pleased with the data that Jackson and April are on the market enjoying clam chowder together and other things that people do in Boston. Japril forever!

Meredith and Derek

One that started everything. The love story between Meredith Grey (Ellen Pompeo) and Derek “McDreamy” Shepherd (Patrick Dempsey) grabbed us from the 1st episode, whenever we learned alongside Mer that her one-night stand just so been with a health care provider at Seattle Grace Hospitalwhere she was starting her surgical intern program. Over 11 seasons, we watched because they overcame returning wives (his), attempted suicides (hers), and a complete litany of life-threatening disasters to finally get married…with a Post-It. Sadly, because of Dempsey’s decision to leave from the series, their storythough not their lovewas cut short when Shonda Rhimes wrote Derek out the only way she felt she could: Killing him in an automobile wreck.

Meredith and Herself

She actually is the sun, in the end.

Jackson and April

Ah, Japril. The romance that were only available in calamitynever forget when April (Sarah Drew) left her fianc standing at the altar to perform off with Jackson (Jesse Williams)and ended in tragedy. After eloping and discovering she was pregnant, the brand new couple found that their unborn child had a fatal condition, requiring April to provide birth with their stillborn son, Samuel. They divorced in season 11, though a one-night stand brought a daughter, Harriet, in season 12. By enough time Drew left the series in season 14, she was reunited with jilted beau Matthew (Justin Bruening), spontaneously marrying him with Jackson’s blessing.

However, Japril fans received some home as April returned to Grey’s in season 17 to greatly help summary Jackson’s journey. Specifically, after Jackson made a decision to proceed to Boston to leadthe foundation in its fight for racial equity, a newly single April made a decision to go to the east coast making use of their daughterHarrietleaving hope these two may reunite later on.

And, in the growing season 18 finale, the Grey’s creative team confirmed that Japril romantically reunited because they had both doctors kiss in the episode.

Callie and Arizona

Yes, Callie Torres (Sara Ramirez) had relationships ahead of Arizona Robbins’ (Jessica Capshaw) arrival in season five, but do not require mattered nearly just as much as the epic romance that has been Calzona. (Sorry, not sorry, George.) The couple got married, raised Sofia, Callie’s daughter with Mark Sloan (Eric Dane), together, and weathered Arizona’s leg amputation and infidelity before eventually getting divorced in season 11. It appeared like among TV’s greatest lesbian love stories would remain a tragedy when Ramirez left the show in season 12, with Callie moving in the united states with new girlfriend Penny, however when Capshaw was written out by the end of season 14, fans got a glimmer of hope as a newly-single Callie was prepared to welcome Arizona to NYC with open arms. (Only if Ramirez had returned for the episode…)

Izzie and Denny

Pour one out for the initial tragic doctor-patient relationship Grey’s ever introduced us to. When Izzie (Katherine Heigl) met cardiothoracic patient Denny Duquette (recurring guest star Jeffrey Dean Morgan) in season two, it had been around for the intern. She was head over heels for the lovable grumpand so were we. If they became engaged, we knew it couldn’t last. Also it didn’t. His condition deteriorated and she put her career at risk by deliberately cutting his LVAD wire to go him up the donor registry. He got his new heart, but stroked out hours later and died in the growing season finale. His memory lived on, though, when Izzie inherited $8.7 million from him and she opened the Denny Duquette Memorial Clinic, a free of charge clinic at a healthcare facility. For us, we’ve never had the opportunity to hear Snow Patrol‘s “Chasing Cars” quite just as, even each one of these years later.

Mark and Lexie

Sure, Meredith’s other half-sister Lexie (Chyler Leigh) and Mark “McSteamy” Sloan (Eric Dane) were in a small number of other relationships throughout their times spent roaming the halls of Seattle Grace. But no relationship was more vital that you either of these compared to the one they struck up in season five, tormenting them using its on-off nature until they professed their love for just one another and promptly died in the growing season eight-ending plane crash. RIP.

Richard and Ellis

Sure, Chief Webber (James Pickens Jr.)and Mer’s mom, the brilliant surgeon Ellis Grey (played by recurring guest star Kate Burton), were married to other folks if they began their romance back in your day. Nonetheless it was torrid enough to tear Mer’s home life apart and deliver us a surprise love child by means of Maggie Pierce (Kelly McCreary), whom we first met in season 10 and contains since turn into a cornerstone of the series. It had been an illicit love that could never last, not least because Ellis was ravaged by Alzheimer’s until her death in season three. Nonetheless it had so much effect on almost everything.

Izzie and Alex

Izzie and Alex always found a method to be there for another if they were dealing with their latest heartbreak as a result of another person. And their growing bond could’ve really been something if Heigl hadn’t made a decision to leave the show in season six following the characters tied the knot, leaving us with another cruel “vanishing lover” scenario, la Burke’s disappearance (mentioned below). Little did we realize it would get back to offer Alex (Justin Chambers) a means off the series when Chambers abruptly left Grey’s in early 2020, shocking fans with the revelation that Izzie have been raising Alex’s kids on a farm somewhere, providing the only real possible reason behind him to abandon his wife that may not make him appear to be a total monster.

Cristina and Owen

Cristina’sfirst appearance with this list is really a bit more successful thanhersecond (we’ll reach Burke, we promise),for the reason that this couple actually managed to get down the aisle, even though time Owen (Kevin McKidd), stricken with PTSD-induced nightmares, nearly choked her to death in his sleep. However when she got pregnant and thought we would have an abortion, he couldn’t really handle it also it eventually tore them apart. They divorced and we realized that perhaps Cristina’s greatest romance would continually be with her career. And you also know very well what? That’s A-OK.

Bailey and Ben

Miranda Bailey’s (Chandra Wilson) first marriage ultimately ended in disaster, nonetheless it allowed her, in season six, to meet up a cute new anesthesiologist by the name of Ben Warren (Jason George). Their marriage has experienced everything: his impulsive have to change jobs on a whim (first to become surgeon and today a firefighter) and her coronary attack. And thoughthere is real strain on the union because of Ben’s new high-risk jobsomething that’s playing out both on Grey’s and its own spinoff series, Station 19something tells us there is not anything both of these can’t (and won’t) overcome.

Alex and Jo

In the end his romantic stops and starts, Alex just could have finally found the main one in new bride Jo (Camilla Luddington). But addressing couple, a thing that only happened in the growing season 14 finale, took them overcoming her dark, abusive past marriage and his nearly likely to jail for beating the snot out of a co-worker. (Poor DeLuca didn’t deserve that beating, regardless of how things looked when Alex walked in to the room!)Oncethey were finally married and she’d taken his last name, this thing appeared as if endgame to us. Sadly, Chambers’ shocking exit from the show halfway through season 16 would forcibly prove us wrong.

Amelia and Kai

We have been really rooting for both of these. Amelia hasn’t had the very best of luck with her love life on Grey’sraise your voice to her divorce from Owen and her rejection of Link’s marriage proposalbut she appears to have found something really special withDr. Kai Bartley (E.R. Fightmaster). The pair genuinely share a love of neuroscience, and Kaiisn’t afraid to call Amelia out when she tries to self-sabotage things. (And, boy, does Amelia want to self-sabotage.)

If the duo sticks it out, we think this may be among the great love stories of Grey’s Anatomy, we just haven’t had enough time to view it play out yet.

Teddy and Henry

Whenever we met Teddy Altman (Kim Raver) in season six, her story was about her mysterious past with Owen and how it could affect his relationship with Cristina. But by next season, she found herself in another of Grey’s patented doctor-patient tragedies after falling for Henry Burton (recurring guest star Scott Foley). They impulsively got married so he might use her medical health insurance to cover the ongoing cost of treatment, eventually falling in love. Naturally, he’d succumb to his heart condition during surgery in season eight, leaving Teddy devastated and out of employment. (Owen fired her so she could move ahead, knowing she’d never take action on her behalf own.)

Richard and Catherine

Aswife Adele (Lorette Devine) was deteriorating because of her Alzheimer’s diagnosis, Richard found himself on the receiving end of advances from Jackson’s powerful mom, Catherine Avery (recurring guest star and executive producer Debbie Allen). He refused on the lands he was a married man, not attempting to be considered a cheater twice over. But as Adele eventually succumbed to her illness in season nine, he warmed to Catherine plus they entered right into a relationship andwere happily married from season 11 to 16. Needless to say, that is Grey’s we’re discussing and the pair separated following Catherine’s angry power plays in the wake of Meredith’s insurance scam by the end of season 15.Over time, including a brush with death for Richard, the pair reconciled.

Owen and Amelia

Was Owen’s relationship with Derek’s recovering addict sister Amelia (Caterina Scorsone) epic? Sure, but mostly since it was so riddled with dramatic obstacles and little happiness. They never saw eye-to-eye on children, a sticking point for Owen since his days with Cristina. That they had to overcome her relapses and brain tumor. They’d gotten married and divorced. Andthen, when raising a foster child and his drug-addict teen mother, Teddy returnedpregnant with Owen’s child. They’ve finally gone their separate ways, with Owen and Teddy attempting to ensure it is workemphasis on tryingwhile Amelia’s started a family group of her very own with hunky new doc Link (Chris Carmack). Although Amelia and Link’s relationship isn’t so hot right now!

Meredith and Nick

Is Dr. Nick Marsh (Scott Speedman) Meredith’s next great love? It appears the writers want that to be true, but we aren’t so sure. After creating a great first impression in season 14, Nick was cut back in season 18 to be Meredith’s Minnesota companion. Though it appeared like this is just likely to be considered a fling between your two doctors, things have certainly escalated, with Nick telling Meredith that he’s “falling in love” in the March 17 episode.

While we like Nick, his life is in Minnesota, leaving him wanting Meredith to relocate to the land of 10,000 lakes. Respectfully, Meredith’s place reaches Grey Sloan Memorial and in her Seattle childhood home where she’s raising her three kids.

Alex and Ava/Rebecca Pope

In season three, Alex Karev got his first taste of truly tragic love whenever a ferryboat accident brought a pregnant Jane Doe (recurring guest star Elizabeth Reaser) with amnesia in to the hospital. Because they grew closer, Alex helped her forge a fresh identity, picking the name Ava. When her memory returned after she gave birth, she admitted her name was Rebecca Pope and she’d left a negative marriage. After heading back to her husband, she returned to Alex’s life in season four, telling him she was pregnant. Unfortunately, once the pregnancy was revealed to be always a hallucination, the consequence of a personality disorder, and Rebecca attempted suicide, Alex realized she needed more help than he could provide and was forced to admit her for psychiatric care and say goodbye.

Cristina and Burke

Cristina Yang’s secondappearance with this list is mainly notable for how it ended. Her romance with Preston Burke (Isaiah Washington) was type of the anti-MerDer for the reason that Burke was a jerk and just how he let Cristina covertly do his surgeries for him after he’d been shot was so unethical we can not even. And he got mad at her for confessing? No, bruh. And he left her at the altar and disappeared from her life forever? (A move necessitated by Washington’s infamous firing over his unsavory behavior towards gay cast member T.R. Knight.) Good riddance. When he returned in season 10 to provide Cristina his hospital in Switzerland (to greatly help send Oh off), it had been literally minimum he may have done. Is it possible to tell we can’t stand Burke?
