WHO Europe expects more monkeypox-related deaths

THE PLANET Health Organization’s European office said Saturday that more monkeypox-related deaths should be expected, following reports of the initial fatalities outside Africa, while stressing that severe complications were still rare.

“With the continued spread of monkeypox in Europe, we shall be prepared to see more deaths,” Catherine Smallwood, Senior Emergency Officer at WHO Europe, said in a statement.

Smallwood emphasized that the target must be “interrupting transmission quickly in Europe and stopping this outbreak”.

However, Smallwood stressed that generally the condition heals itself with no need for treatment.

“The notification of deaths because of monkeypox will not change our assessment of the outbreak in Europe. We realize that although self-limiting generally, monkeypox could cause severe complications,” Smallwood noted.

The Spanish health ministry recorded another monkeypox-related on Saturday, each day after Spain and Brazil reported their first fatalities.

The announcements marked what exactly are regarded as the initial deaths from the current outbreak outside Africa.
