The Chicago Cubs opted against trading Willson Contreras or Ian Happ at the deadline. While Contreras was a head-scratcher, Happ makes some sense.

Happ has made great mechanical improvements this year with hitting coach Greg Brown, sufficient reason for per year left on his contract, the Cubs felt they ought to use that control to obtain additional out from the slugging outfielder.

The 27-year-old had a lot of suitors, like the Toronto Blue Jays and Atlanta Braves, at Tuesdays trade deadline. However, exactly like Contreras, Chicagos price tag was too much to meet up.

Unlike Contreras, though, keeping Happ makes some sense.

Contreras is all but gone following this season unless Chicagos front office changes course. They havent offered him an authentic contract extension since 2018. Happ is really a bit more affordable, and contains per year left on his deal to potentially find out a long-term solution.

Now, Happ and Contreras re-enter the fold on the north side of Chicago in possibly the latters final go-around. Fans can once more clamor together and provide Contreras a standing ovation by the end of the growing season, in the event it truly is his last run.

Happ is slashing .276/.357/.431 on the entire year. His power is down from years past, but his average and contact rates have since risen, so its a good trade-off.

Jed Hoyer explained his approach, though it doesnt create a great deal of sense if hes truly attempting to build another great Cubs team as hes frequently mentioned:

We were ready to listen if someone gave us a bit which could really help our future. We never crossed that threshold. Willson is really a really valuable player. Hes been an excellent Cub for six years now and we never surely got to that place where we felt comfortable creating a deal.

There you own it, from the person himself. Keeping Contreras is really a little more of a puzzle, but Happ makes a lot of since. Chicagos expectations werent met for a new player with another year of control left on his contract.

And therefore, Happ reaches live out this nightmare around against next summer.
