World’s first HIV-positive to HIV-positive heart transplant performed at NYC hospital

A FRESH York City hospital performed the world’s first HIV-positive to HIV-positive heart transplant.

The individual, a female in her 60s, experienced advanced heart failureand received the donation, plus a simultaneous kidney transplant, in planting season at Montefiore Health Systemin the Bronx, in accordance with a news release.

Dr. Ulrich P. Jorde, with the Division of Cardiology at Montefiore and a professor of medicine at Albert Einstein College of Medicine, called the task a “milestone in the annals of organ donation.”

“Because of significant medical advances, people coping with HIV have the ability to control the condition so well they can now save the lives of other folks living with this problem,” Jorde said in a statement.

The girl spent five weeks recovering in a healthcare facility following a four-hour surgery. She’s being monitored by her transplant physicians at Montefiore.

It wasn’t until 2013, that the HIV Organ Policy Equity Act allowed people coping with the problem to donate their organs to an HIV-positive recipient.

Montefiore is among 25 centers in the U.S. permitted provide procedure after it met surgical benchmarks and outcomes set by theOrgan Procurement and Transplantation Network, based on the news release.

This is an elaborate case and a genuine multidisciplinary effort by cardiology, surgery, nephrology, infectious disease, critical care and immunology, said Dr. Omar Saeed, the girl cardiologist.

“Causeing this to be option open to people coping with HIV expands the pool of donors and means more folks, with or without HIV, could have quicker usage of a lifesaving organ,” Saeed said. “To state we are pleased with what this signifies for the patients and the medical community most importantly, can be an understatement.”
