MILWAUKEE Frankie Montas time with the Yankees has gotten off to a rough start and its own getting worse.

Montas has around three weeks to obtain before the postseason.

His command isnt there at this time, one AL scout said. Without that, that is whats gonna happen.

On Friday, Montas said both his split-finger fastball and sinker were ineffective.

Beyond five shutout innings at Tampa Bay on Sept. 4, Montas has been mediocre at best.

Manager Aaron Boone managed to get clear the Yankees aren’t considering moving Montas out from the rotation, but Domingo German can be an substitute for take his place if the team chooses to go that route. Frankie Montas
Frankie Montas has struggled since joining the Yankees at the deadline.

Asked about Montas capability to regain the proper execution he showed in Oakland this year, when he became possibly the most sought-after starting pitcher on the trade market following Luis Castillos move from Cincinnati to Seattle, Boone said he was confident Montas can figure it out.

We are in need of him to, Boone said Friday. Weve surely got to get him relocating an excellent direction [to get] momentum. Weve surely got to keep working at it. He is able to be considered a difference-maker when hes going well.

But that difference-making ability hasnt been on display.

He pitched well with the As last season, finishing with a career-high 187 innings.

Montas struggled for a lot of the shortened 2020 season, his first after he was suspended for testing positive for a banned substance in violation of MLBs Joint Drug Prevention and CURE.

And Montas has rarely been more ineffective than he was on Friday, when he was staked to a 5-0 lead by the finish of the next inning. He was faraway from the beginning, although he survived a 27-pitch first inning without having to be scored on. But Willy Adames hit a three-run homer off him in underneath of the next and he quit two more runs in the 3rd.

Compare Montas early results with the Yankees to Sonny Grays after he was acquired from Oakland in 2017 and Montas arises short.

For several his troubles with the Yankees, Gray actually pitched fairly well for them early in his tenure in 2017. In 11 regular season starts following his acquisition, Gray had a time of 3.72, not that higher compared to the 3.43 mark he previously with the As that year.

While his home run and walk rates went up with the Yankees that season, it wasnt until a three-start stretch in April 2018, when he allowed 14 runs in 11 innings, that Gray begun to unravel.

The Yankees quit three well-regarded pitching prospects (Sears, Ken Waldichuck and Luis Medina), in addition to minor league infielder Cooper Bowman in trade for Montas and Trivino, not only because of this season, but also for 2023, aswell.

They have to expect greater results down the stretch for Montas to create that move worthwhile.
